FORMEN is the successor to the exhibition shown in autumn 2023, BILDER. As they were previously in BILDER, the genre boundaries are blurred here too: installation can be drawing, or sculpture can be painterly; perception is challenged, visual habits are questioned. The title FORMEN indicates that this is about materiality, about handling materials and transformations. However, it is also about time, about the stories or information inherent and passed on in the shapes: they resonate in the beholders as well.

Slides are a rarely used visual medium these days, but they definitely still have a certain presence. In her installation “Sichtung III_memories”, Ulrike Thiele (*1958) transfers slides’ characteristic of functioning as an information and memory store into a functionless, artistic context. The visual information is mostly covered in glue or spray, and the slides are arranged in a frame or otherwise suspended in a big cluster, held up by iron rods acting as co-ordinates that bring order to their chaos. In Ulrike Thiele’s constructively abstract-looking pieces, the slides’ specific material aesthetic is foregrounded, but at the same time, they are highly narrative.

In her spatial installation “Webt ich das Tuch”, Anna Siebert (*1972) utilizes used wrapping papers that she has collected through making appeals on the social networks. This is consumable material, manufactured to protect our consumer goods and, in its very purpose, a throw-away product. The individual pieces of paper, having different properties, traces of use, and sizes, are tacked together to form a large surface that covers the room. Anna Siebert sounds out the material’s limits and simultaneously employs it to initiate enquiries into the history and function(ality) of the material.

Earth and steel are the characteristic materials of the sculptural works by Madeleine Dietz (*1953). Out of the interplay between dried, light-coloured earth, which is often moulded to form bricks, and the stereometrical grey steel shapes, diverse associative possibilities are yielded in turn. These are two materials whose properties could barely be more contrasting: here, the organic, life-giving earth; there, the manmade, cold-looking, smooth steel. The symbolism of Madeleine Dietz’s works is elementary: becoming and fading, the shaping of things, concepts of eternity and ephemerality. And storing and remembering play a role here again as well.

“La bibliothèque est en feu” (The Library is on Fire) by emmanuel boos (*1969) consists of 216 cubes made out of Sèvres porcelain with a wide variety of glazes. The installation is completed by notes on the formulas of the latter. He examines the glazes’ visual and aesthetic properties, sounds out the possibilities. The process during which the glaze is prepared, applied to the fragments, and fired is full of decisions, each of which influences, for itself, the fine nuances of the glaze. Along the way, emmanuel boos must rely on his knowledge and experience and allow for chance or failure at the same time. Only after firing is the glaze’s colour and optical structure revealed. For boos, glaze is far more than the colourful holder of a shape: in it, poetry is revealed.
